335/366 - "Scary Eyes"

(F/5.6, 100mm, 1/200, ISO 100, Canon 5D Mk II)

Tonight Harper was playing on the couch and asked me to take her photo.  I said sure and she told me she would show me her "Scary Face."  More like scary eyes.

334/366 - "Story Time"

(F/2.8, 95mm, 1/25, ISO 3200, Canon 5D Mk II)

Jonah is getting very excited for Christmas and the arrival of Ernie the Elf.  Tonight he decided to tell Harper the story of the Elf on the Shelf.

333/366 - "Scary Trees"

(F/8, 75mm, 3 Exposures, ISO 100, Canon 5D Mk II)

There was a full moon tonight so I took the opportunity to get a photo of the silhouetted trees behind our house.

332/366 - "Half Wreath"

(F/2.8, 100mm, 1/80 sec, ISO 200, Canon 5D Mk II)

I was listening to some Elliot Smith trying to relax and figure out what to shoot tonight.  A cranberry wreath is hanging on the powder room door and I decided to over expose the door and desaturate the orange in the wood.  I am typically not a fan of the selective color retouching but in the case I think it works.

331/366 - "Purple Close, Purple Far"

(F/8, 100mm, 6.0 sec, ISO 100, Canon 5D Mk II)

I decided to do a macro shot today, and since Sue and the kids decorated the house this weekend, I should have enough inspiration to get me through a few more days.  Do you have a ceramic tree?  We have two and I remember growing up with several adorning the house during the holidays.

330/366 - "The Green Family"

(F/8, 65mm, 1/200 sec, ISO 100, Canon 5D Mk II)

Greg, Jess, and the kids came over today for a family portrait and some of the kids too.  This was one of my favorites from the day.

329/366 - "Dirty Dozen (Hill #1 Center Ave.)"

(F/2.8, 70mm, 1/125 sec, ISO 100, Canon 5D Mk II)

For this years addition of the Dirty Dozen it was about 30 degrees with snow flurries.  I wasn't able to ride it this year due to lack of training, so Jonah and I went out to watch the first hill.  You can see the bottom of the first hill (Click Here).  We are positioned at the top and this is probably about half way through the pack of about 200 to 225 that started it this year.  Hill #1 is probably about 25% grade and about 1/2 mile long and starts a mere 2 miles into the ride, so little time to warm up.

I wish I knew this guys name and I should as he is a regular rider on our Tuesday night rides in the summer.  I do know he originates from some part of the United Kingdom and has a really thick accent, which makes me believe he is probably from Scotland.

If you care to see some more of my photographs from Center Ave. (Hill #1), then jump on over to  Next year I am planning on either riding again or photographing more hills than just the first one.  Enjoy!

328/366 - "Three"

(F/1.4, 50mm, 1/80 sec, ISO 400, Canon 7D)

Today was Harper's 3rd birthday.  Hard to believe that she is growing fast.  It is also the day that Sue starts decorating for Christmas, and I was able to get Harper to sit down in front of a small Christmas tree.

327/366 - "Happy Thanksgiving"

(F/7.1, 17mm, 1/30 sec, ISO 200, Canon 5D Mk II)

Wanted to knock out the photo today early, so you get the table all set and ready for our Thanksgiving Day feast.  I am thankful for many things, and one that tops the list for this year is that this everyday a foto project is almost over.  Less than 40 days left!  Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

326/366 - "Shining Light"

(F/2.8, 70mm, 1/200 sec, ISO 400, Canon 5D Mk II)

When the awnings come down on the front porch we get great natural light in the evenings.  Tonight I was inspired by a tweet I read this morning about being thankful for the way light shines through a window.  I would have to agree.

325/366 - "Reflective Allegheny"

(F/8, 40mm, 3 Exposures, ISO 100, Canon 7D)

The one nice thing about the time change is that the golden hour comes a little earlier in the day.  I was able to grab a few exposures on the way home from work today.  This is looking at the Fox Chapel Yacht Club.  Since it is getting colder with less wind there is little boat traffic making a nice quiet reflective river.

324/366 - "Magna-Tile Tower"

(F/4, 17mm, 1/200 sec, ISO 100, Canon 5D Mk II)

Jonah got some Magna-Tiles for his birthday last month.  Tonight he built a smaller version of the Washington Monument and I setup a flash behind and and snapped some photos.  It turned out pretty cool considering all the lights were on in the house.

323/366 - "B&N Singers"

(F/4, 17mm, 1/50 sec, ISO 800, Canon 7D)

Jonah's school had a fundraiser at the local Barnes & Noble store and the K through 4th grade classes entertained the crowd by singing a few songs.

322/366 - "Birthday Shock"

(F/2.8, 50mm, 1/80 sec, ISO 1600, Canon 5D Mk II)

Yesterday we had Harper's 3rd Birthday Party.  This is Harper's "WTF" just happened face after her brother blew out all the candles.  This was followed by some tears and a re-lighting of the candles.

321/366 - "Veteran's Day Assembly"

(F/2.8, 125mm, 1/200 sec, ISO 1600, Canon 5D Mk II)

Today at Jonah's school they had a grade school assembly to honor the student's relatives that are also a veteran.  Luckily for Jonah his Pappy is a veteran and was also able to make the ceremony.  After the ceremony the yearbook staff took a photo and I was able to grab one as well.

320/366 - "The Bargain"

(F/2.8, 115mm, 1/200 sec, ISO 200, Canon 5D Mk II)

I was able to catch Jonah and Harper in the act of bargaining.  It went something like this...
Jonah: If you give me the pan, donut and pop bottle, I will give you this car.
Harper:  NO!
Jonah: If you give me the pan, donut and pop bottle, I will give you this car.
Harper:  NO!
Jonah: If you give me the pan, donut and pop bottle, I will give you this car.
Harper:  NO!
Jonah: Dad, Harper won't share.

319/366 - "Pattern Overload"

(F/5.6, 75mm, 1/200 sec, ISO 100, Canon 5D Mk II)

I was experimenting with some light modifiers in the living room and as usual Harper was my willing model.  Unfortunately the pattern of the chair and the pattern of her shirt really don't go well together.

318/366 - "Preparing for Battle"

(F/2.8, 100mm, 1/200 sec, ISO 100, Canon 5D Mk II)

Tonight before bed there was a battle brewing.  Looks like the Rebel forces picked up a fireman and a cheerleader along the way.

317/366 - "Colorful Line"

(F/6.3, 100mm, 1/200 sec, ISO 100, Canon 5D Mk II)

The kids were coloring tonight and when they were finished I lined them all up.  I started to try and get all the print facing the same way but that was fruitless and I was in a bit of a hurry.

316/366 - "The Park"

(F/2.8, 130mm, 1/1600 sec, ISO 100, Canon 5D Mk II)

Due to the extreme weather conditions today, we completed the kids annual portraits with some outdoor shots.  Check them out at

315/366 - "Little Chef"

(F/2.8, 155mm, 1/60 sec, ISO 800, Canon 5D Mk II)

Jonah loves to help Sue cook and tonight was no exception.  Jonah's task tonight was to pick off the cilantro for the homemade salsa and guacamole for tonights fish tacos.

314/366 - "Drive By Landscape - Cold Morning Sunrise"

(F/8, 19mm, 1/60 sec, ISO 400, Canon 7D)

This is taken from my window while sitting in a bit of traffic in Blawnox on my way to work.  With the time change last week I now get to see the sun come up which is a welcome change.

Thursday, November 8, 2012

313/366 - "Saltine"

(F/11, 100mm, 1/200 sec, ISO 100, Canon 5D Mk II)

I had a few saltines this evening and decided that a saltine would probably make a nice macro shot.  The detailed pieces of salt, the dimples, and the toasted cracker turned out to make a decent photo.

312/366 - "Leaving"

(F/5.6, 82mm, 1/200 sec, ISO 100, Canon 5D Mk II)

I was playing around with some lighting tonight and while I was in progress of doing this Harper was packing her backpack getting ready to leave.  When I asked where she was off to she replied "The grocery store." and before she set off I snapped this photograph.

311/366 - "New Candy"

(F/4, 55mm, 1/100 sec, ISO 100, Canon 5D Mk II)

One of the fun things about all the candy from Halloween is that the kids get to try new stuff.  This is Harper's reaction to a 3 Musketeer (mint version) bar.

310/366 - "After School Activity"

(F/4, 28mm, 1/125 sec, ISO 100, Canon 5D Mk II)

After school today Jonah and Harper played like civilized children.  I am not sure how or why this happened and I really don't care.  I was so happy that I had to take a few photos.

Sunday, November 4, 2012

309/366 - "Meatloaf"

(F/5.6, 47mm, 1/100 sec, ISO 100, Canon 5D Mk II)

Sue made meatloaf for dinner and Jonah wanted to help, which is a good idea because someone needs to learn how to make it besides Sue.

308/366 - "Annual Photos Outtake"

(F/5.6, 73mm, 1/100 sec, ISO 100, Canon 5D Mk II)

This morning I setup the studio in the garage and took the kids annual photographs.  This is one of my favorites and will probably never make it to print, so it will be considered an outtake.  Later when I was reviewing the photos Harper was looking over myt shoulder and told me that was her "grump" face.

307/366 - "Wine Time"

(F/2.8, 100mm, 1/100 sec, ISO 200, Canon 5D Mk II)

Sue had a glass of wine with dinner and since it is the end of the week she may even have a second glass.

306/366 - "Candy Please"

(F/2.8, 100mm, 1/200 sec, ISO 200, Canon 5D Mk II)

I was struggling for some inspiration tonight, so I told the kids that I would give them candy if the would smile for me.  Worked like a charm.
